Morabeza - a Poem (uma Poema)

I wrote this poem for an assignment at Brigham Young University - Idaho, March 17, 2023. In one sense this poem is an expression of a returned missionary's love for a very special people and a very special place on Earth. More precisely it is a tribute to the Cape Verdean people themselves and the best part of their culture. I pray that those who read this with the Spirit of the Lord may catch a glimpse of how the Lord views these people and feels about them.

Before my feet had reached your shore,

I sought my own and nothing more.

But while I was your castaway,

I sought your treasures night and day:

Repentant souls like priceless jew’ls,

Relenting pride, the wise made fools.

Your isles waited on the law,

And hearts beheld what no eye saw:

The sinful, surly, savage sea

Was parted at the Lord’s decree,

And all the treasures of your lands

Are seal’d up where your temple stands.

And now, return’d from ventures dared,

My heart recalls you, Cabo Verde,

And knows, if man know truth at all,

The greatness of your islands small.
